Parkersburg wins big on the road against Riverside, 69-20

Riverside hosted Parkersburg in Belle yesterday evening. Both teams enter the Week 5 matchup at 2-2.

Riverside seemed to have a promising start, returning the opening kickoff to Parkersburg's 30-yard line. After an incomplete pass from Jaidon Clark to Camden Bulger, Riverside would go for it on 4th down. Jaidon Clark would be stopped short of the first-down mark for a turnover on downs.

On Parkersburg’s first drive, a holding penalty negated a long touchdown pass, but the Big Red struck the first blow soon after. Alex Greer ran it in from 12 yards out to put the Big Red up 7-0.

On Riverside’s next drive, Parkersburg applied pressure, forcing a pick-six and taking a 13-0 lead after a botched PAT.

Riverside’s struggles would continue on their next drive. Center and quarterback were not in sync. They had multiple botched snaps and a snap over the head on third down. Ending their third drive of the first quarter.

It only took one play for Parkersburg to find the end zone again. A 51-yard touchdown pass gave Parkersburg a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Parkersburg never looked back, winning 69-20.

“We’ve got to clean up.” Coach Matt Kimes, Parkersburg head coach. “Knowing we got some really big games coming up down the road starting next week, and we got to play cleaner ball if we want to have a chance to beat teams like that.”

“Well, we've got to be able to execute in all three phases and sustain our effort and our energy and our execution right for four quarters, which we haven't done against a top-tier team yet…. Now, if we can put four quarters together, which we're going to have to against a really good team like GW in order to go there, come out of there with a win.”

Parkersburg (3-2) has a chance to show the state what kind of team they are with their next three games against George Washington (4-0), Huntington (3-1), and Cabell Midland (4-1).

Riverside (2-3) hosts Spring Valley (2-3) next week before their bye week. After that, they play host to South Charleston (4-1).
